So You Want To Adopt Your New Best Friend

Cairns & Cousins Terrier Rescue will consider adoptive families from the United States and Canada. Our goal is to make the best rescue match taking into consideration the dog's background and your family's needs. Every dog is different: personality, temperament, energy, comfort with kids and other animals, medical needs and more. We take all these factors into consideration when making a furever-home match. We are very careful about the placements we make. We do our best to match the right dog with the right adoptive home because we want this to be the pet's permanent home.

If you are willing to wait for the right animal to be matched to you,
you are an ideal candidate for Cairns & Cousins Terrier Rescue. As our success rate proves, these precious dogs are well worth the wait.

OUR PROCESS

1

Apply

We appreciate you wanting to bring a dog into your home. In order for us to find the right pet for you, we need you to submit an adoption application.

2

Review

We will review your application upon receipt. If we have any questions or concerns, we will contact you for clarity.

3

Reference Check

Once your application review is complete, your application is assigned to a coordinator. This volunteer will contact your vet and confirm that your pet(s) have received ongoing care, received any recommended vaccinations and received heartworm preventative. If there are any gaps in this information, we will notify you so that you can respond and resolve any issues.

Your personal references are also contacted – generally we like to speak with at least two people -one relative and a friend, or two friends, co-workers or any combination. These are generally brief conversations to confirm you will provide one of our rescue dogs a forever home. Applicants that rent must have a lease agreement for pets as well and we always confirm with the landlord, property manager or photocopy of the relevant section in the lease.

4

Home Visit

Once your application review is complete, a Cairns & Cousins Terrier Rescue volunteer will contact you to schedule a home visit to meet in person and discuss all-things pet. During the home visit, we look for potential hazards for the dog that the adopter may not have considered. All household members must be present during the home visit. This includes all pets.

5

Finding Your Pet

Once approved to adopt, the search for your terrier begins. You will be assigned a Placement Specialist who will contact you regarding dogs that you are specifically interested in as well as dogs currently in our foster care program who may be a good fit for you and your family. Your Placement Specialist will be your point of contact and assist you through the entire process, including being there for you when your dog comes home. And if any issues arise, we have a team of Post Adoption Specialists who be there for you to assist in addressing any challenges to insure a successful adoption.
